Abstract

One of the major difficulties encountered in the numerical simulation of fluid flows lies in the discretisation of the advection term u · grad θ (u= velocity, which is assumed to be known in this chapter; θ= advected quantity: concentration, temperature, vorticity,..., or momentum). We begin with a short description of upwind finite difference schemes, since the ideas involved are underlying some of the upwind finite element schemes.
