Zusammenfassung
Der Laser (Abkürzung für Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation) ist in seiner äußeren Erscheinungsform die Quelle eines stark gebündelten Strahls weitgehend kohärenter elektromagnetischer Wellen mit Frequenzen, die sich von denen des Ultravioletts über den Bereich des sichtbaren Lichts bis ins ferne Infrarot erstrecken. Ihm verwandt ist der Maser (Abkürzung für Microwave Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation), ein phasengetreuer Verstärker und ein Generator kohärenter Wellen im Bereich nachrichtentechnischer Höchstfrequenzen. Im Laser wie im Maser kann aus dem primären Vorgang, der Verstärkung, durch Rückkopplung eine Selbsterregung entstehen. Die Vorgänge im Laser (und auch im Maser) beruhen auf der Quantisierung der Energie in der Materie und im elektromagnetischen Strahlungsfeld. Physikalische Grundlage des Lasers ist also die Quantenphysik.
