Abstract
The need to learn more about the development and antecedents of flexibility is generally acknowledged. The question of how to learn more about such development, however, produces a wide variety of strategic approaches. Some investigators attempt to locate developmental determinants through retrospective study of parental practices or other forms of training, an approach which may give some information about environmental antecedents but provides little information about the developmental process. Other investigators study the problem “in miniature” by simulating training conditions to learn more about short-term effects, especially increase or decrease in flexibility, an approach which permits careful control of environmental conditions but does not necessarily deal with the developmental process underlying the evolvement of flexible orientations.
