Animal Studies on Developmental Determinants of Behavioral Adaptability

  • Chapter
Experience Structure & Adaptability

Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to attempt to specify some of the determining variables which, when administered to animals in early life, have been found to be effective in modifying later behavioral adaptability. The review will be selective, rather than totally inclusive. (See Denenberg, 1962b, for a general review of the field of early experience.) One of the selective features is that most of the cited research has been carried out on the laboratory rat, since most researchers have used rats. Also, by staying within a species, one is better able to abstract generalities.
