Abstract
In this chapter I motivate and formalize a logic which takes account of the subject matter of propositions. The point of the chapter is to present a particularly simple example of a general method for incorporating an aspect of propositions into the semantics; nothing in later chapters depends on your accepting this analysis of subject matters. In the next chapter I introduce the general approach which, if you prefer, you can read first and then return to this as an example.
