Emulsions

  • Chapter
Surfactant Systems

Abstract

Emulsions, traditionally prepared with naturally occurring gums such as acacia and tragacanth have been used in pharmacy for centuries as means of administration of oils or vitamins. In the last decade, however, there has been renewed interest in the emulsion as a vehicle for delivering drugs to the body as it has been found to have several advantageous characteristics, frequently enhancing the bioavailability of the drug substance. Concentrated emulsions are used in topical therapy as semi-solid vehicles. In these systems the delicate interplay between the components of the emulsion, the preservatives and the drug molecules, make this an intriguing though theoretically almost intractable topic. The replacement of the natural gums with surfactants has led to the advantages of a more rigorous and fundamental approach to the formulation of different systems, but the presence of surfactants has introduced extra facets to complicate their behaviour. The amphipathic nature of the surfactant leads to a potential biological effect on membranes; the presence of surfactant micelles in the continuous phase leads to the potential solubilization of components such as preservatives, flavours and drug. We will deal with some of these problems in this chapter and with what is still the foremost problem with emulsions-their physical stability.
