Abstract

Geologists recognize only one naturally occurring earth material called rock. Engineers differentiate between rocks and soils, although sometimes the dividing line is unclear. In particular, engineers differentiate between the reactions of rocks and soils to the forces imposed on them or in them by construction. The study of the reaction of soils to these forces is called soil mechanics and the study of the reaction of rocks is called rock mechanics.
