Abstract

On September 20th 1792, in the new département of the Marne, was fought the battle of Valmy. The Prussian forces engaged and defeated were commanded by Duke Ferdinand of Brunswick, nephew of the hero of Rossbach; and Valmy has an importance comparable with Rossbach. It was described at the time as the Thermopylae of the French Republic; at any rate, it saved the French Revolution; and it encouraged the French Government to persist in their policy of revolutionary war. War was declared against England on February 1st 1793.
