Abstract

In the previous lecture I developed a theory in which (the core of) exactly-implicatures and exactly-meanings are analyzed through an operation of scalar maximalization at the event type. I will start the present lecture with a straightforward argument that this theory of maximalization is incompatible with the scope mechanism of lecture Six. After that I will develop a modified scope mechanism, and explore some of its consequences (while the discussion of some other consequences are delayed to lecture Nine).
