Abstract

One of the more immediately obvious methods of subdivision of the elements is the distinction between metals and non-metals. The distinction is based on both physical and chemical properties, some of the distinguishing properties for a metal being as follows:

  • Ductility, that is, ability to be bent or otherwise deformed.

  • High conductivity for heat and electricity.

  • Capability of taking a polish, giving metallic lustre.

  • Ease of alloying, alloys differing from other forms of chemical combination in that there is no law of constant proportions.

  • Chemically, the oxides are basic and salts are formed with acids.
