Abstract

As of the mid-1800s nothing was known of the origin of our important economic crops. Their origin was said at that time to be an “impenetrable secret.” However, Alphonse de Candolle’s classic work, “Origin of Cultivated Plants,” published in 1886 and, the more recent studies (1932) by Nikolai Vavilov, the Russian botanist, have contributed much in establishing the centers of origin of some of our more important crops.
