Numerical and Conceptual Models for Recharge Estimation in Arid and Semi-Arid Zones

  • Chapter
Estimation of Natural Groundwater Recharge

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIC,volume 222))

Abstract

Recharge estimation can be based on a wide variety of models which are designed to represent the actual physical processes. This paper considers the direct estimation of recharge using soil moisture balance models, recharge due to losses from irrigation schemes, the influence of the unsaturated zone and recharge due to rivers and other sources of run-off. A study of the water table fluctuation method indicates that indirect methods often provide unreliable estimates. Several examples are included to demonstrate that, by identifying and representing the flow mechanisms, realistic estimates of recharge can be made.
