Abstract
This practical chapter deals with the selection, creation, and implementation of materials designed to support learners in their learning beyond the classroom, and to develop learner autonomy. First, it reviews some of the issues with many of the materials currently available to teachers and their learners. Next, it proposes a model for materials development based on offering support at eight iterative stages in the autonomous learning process. In the final section, the chapter discusses ways of integrating the use of materials into a course to ensure students are wellprepared and supported.
