Abstract
The analyses contained in this volume cover various aspects of the Northern Ireland peace process. These include: the historical background to the Belfast, or Good Friday, Agreement (10 April 1998), and an account of the negotiations which led to it; the repercussions of the Agreement — the efficacy of its institutions, its significance regarding the constitutional status of Northern Ireland and its impact on the electoral fortunes of the leading local political parties; its effects on the development of unionism and nationalism; its impact on the respective paramilitary organizations; an examination of the role of Southern Irish parties in the peace process; and an evaluation of United States’ involvement. The two concluding chapters offer contrasting overall assessments of the Belfast Agreement.
