Abstract

It is with some nostalgia that I now recall the week of Good Friday, 1998. At the beginning of Easter week, I was optimistic that there would be a negotiated historic compromise for Northern Ireland. Why, it might be asked? Polls showed that while the people of Northern Ireland wanted their politicians to talk, they did not expect an agreement. By an overwhelming majority, my own students studying Irish politics at Queen’s University Belfast did not expect an agreement.
