Abstract

Although it was deliberately avoided in the title, the word ‘oligarchy’ has appeared very often in the book itself. It is a word almost as controversial as the group of individuals to whom it is applied. The reason is that it is a word which is inherently, in its etymology and its use over the millennia since Plato and Aristotle first coined it, about political power and indeed ruling power.
