Part of the book series: The Palgrave Macmillan Animal Ethics Series ((PMAES))

Abstract

Zoos present themselves as venues for visual cultural consumption par excellence. Visual: look at everything and stare for as long as you wish — the animals are not going anywhere. Culture: the animals are on display in the hearts of our cities, in institutions promoted as prominent elements of the cultural/tourist infrastructure, heavily advertised and marketed and commodified, replete with gift shops and cafés (which always feature carnivorous menus; at aquariums, there tends to be more seafood).
