Abstract
Chapter 5 is intended to lay the groundwork for what follows in Part III by reviewing the types of research methods and approaches employed in LPP and some of the key terms and concepts that inform this work. The term approaches is used because not all of the areas covered in this chapter include specific methodological guidance; however they do suggest a way to approach LPP. Along the way, I propose some new methodological concepts that may help engender ideas for research projects. For alternative accounts of the methods and approaches covered in this chapter, as well as guidelines for other LPP research methods, consult the edited volume on LPP research methods by Hult and Johnson (2013).
