The Ministry for the Environment ran the Cleaner Production Demonstration Project from 1992 to 1994. This project had two main achievements, the provision of practical New Zealand examples of the benefits of cleaner production techniques, and the production of the Cleaner Production Guidelines for local government authorities to assist them in implementing cleaner production programmes. This paper provides information on how this project was run, as an example for others in implementing cleaner production. It also includes several case studies showing examples of businesses which implemented projects on energy efficiency, good housekeeping, material reuse and recycling, reduction in material use, packaging waste, use of hazardous substances and water use, resource recovery and waste reduction.
