Abstract

The preface to this book raises several questions which are important to our understanding of the brain, in specific terms, and to the larger question of the strategy we use to try to develop a more complete understanding in the future: 1. How can we explain Freeman’s empirical observation that the cerebral cortex regularly undergoes abrupt shifts, following some mix of the alpha and beta rhythms, above and beyond the higher frequency components which he like many others has also observed?
