Professors Arpaly and Schroeder offer a new theory of the role of desire in belief and action, a theory that they present with an abundance of helpful examples. Their focus is intrinsic desires, which they define as desires for things, actions, or states of affairs for their own sake. These desires, and not deliberation or recognition of reasons, they argue, are what ultimately rationalize (explain or justify), beliefs and actions. Their book is rich and complex, but I will focus solely on the relationship between intrinsic desires and virtue, and their conception of these desires and of Reason and Appetite. …
