Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has unveiled the second generation of its pickup truck, which will be launched at the end of 2022. The new VW Amarok will be larger and offer more payload than its predecessor.

The new Amarok is 5350 mm long and will be launched with a four-door double cab (DoubleCab) and two-door single cab (SingleCab). Its technology is based in part on that of the Ford Ranger. The pickup’s fording depth increases from 500 mm to now 800 mm. Off-road characteristics can be further optimized via front bars, underride protection elements, eyelets for towing and a snorkel mounted on the outside of the left A-pillar to supply fresh air to the engine when driving through water. The wheels are up to 21" in size.

The wheelbase, extended to 3270 mm, is said to benefit the second row of seats in the crew cab. The maximum payload increased from just over one ton to now 1.16 t, and the maximum roof load is 350 kg. The loading area between the wheel arches offers space for a transversely loaded Euro pallet; in the SingleCab version there are two. The so-called “cargo box” can be secured with an electrically operated roll cover.

Five combustion engines to choose from

VW Commercial Vehicles has developed four turbo diesel engines and one turbo gasoline engine for the new Amarok. The basic 2.0 TDI diesel engine with four cylinders and 110 kW (150 PS) is to be offered only on the African market. The next stage of development will be the 2.0-l four-cylinder TDI with 125 kW (170 PS), followed by a version with bi-turbocharging and an output of 150 kW (204 PS) or 154 kW (209 PS). The 3.0-l V6 diesel engine is either 177 kW (241 PS) or 184 kW (250 PS).

In addition, a 2.3-l gasoline turbo engine is offered with an output of 222 kW (302 PS). Power transmission in the most powerful versions starting at 154 kW is handled by a ten-speed automatic transmission. A six-speed automatic and manual six-speed and five-speed transmissions are available for the other versions. Available in many markets, 4Motion all-wheel drive is offered with selectable all-wheel drive as well as permanent all-wheel drive.

New VW Amarok still coming in 2022

Up to six different driving profiles, including off-road, are available for the driver. In addition, up to 20 new assistance systems are on board. The digital instrument cluster is 8.0" in size, or 12.0" from the "Style" trim level. The infotainment system is operated using a 10- or 12-inch touchscreen in tablet format. The Amarok will be launched in the "Amarok", "Life" and "Style" trim levels and the "PanAmericana" and "Aventura" top versions from the end of 2022.
