Kyocera is ramping up MLCC production for 5G as well as ADAS and EV technologies by building a new production facility. Kyocera is thus responding to the expected higher demand for multilayer ceramic capacitors.

Kyocera Corporation will build a new production facility at its Kokubu Plant Campus in Kagoshima (Japan), according to the supplier of fine ceramic components. As a result, Kyocera aims to increase production capacity for Multi-layer Ceramic Capacitors (MLCCs). The expanded production of MLCCs is expected to meet strong demand in the market. According to Kyocera, the total investment in the new factory facility is approximately 111 million euros.

The reason for the growing demand for MLCCs is that communication terminals and semiconductor components are becoming increasingly compact and sophisticated, the Japanese company said. It also said the expanding commercialization of 5G data centers, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and Electric Vehicle (EV) technologies will be facilitated by smaller, more functional electronic components such as MLCCs.

Production to start in 2024

Construction of the new production facility is scheduled to begin in February 2023. The factory is then scheduled to begin operations in May 2024. The new facility will be located at the current site of Kyocera’s Monozukuri R&D Laboratory, which will be demolished in September 2022.

The expected production level is expected to be circa 74 million per year from May 2024 to March 2025. From fiscal 2026, it is expected to be approximately 148 million euros.
