This paper presents rotating treadmill that combines forward walking of conventional treadmill and rotating motion of rotating platform. In this way we are able to some extent mimic similar turning maneuvers as people utilize when they turn during over ground walking. In a male subject with no known neurological or orthopedic disorders we compared pelvis and torso rotation during walking on rotating treadmill and during over ground walking in circles in four experimental conditions that combine selected levels of gait velocity and required time for completing one full circle. Results show that in all experimental conditions torso and pelvis orientation while the subject was walking on rotating treadmill closely follow torso and pelvis orientation when the subject was walking over ground in circles. Such setup has considerable potential for practical applications in gait rehabilitation when patients progress to a level when more challenging turning maneuvers should be included in rehabilitation program.
