Über dieses Buch

This book highlights computationally enabled and digitally fabricated strategies used in the design of a series of full-size wooden structures. It introduces theoretical foundations and then focuses on the possibilities that have emerged as a result of the material-aware processes. The case studies expound wood as one of the most suitable materials to experience the seamless framework introduced with the digital design-to-construction chain. Two main aspects of the pavilions constructed, developed in various international academic groups, are considered. On one hand the case studies explore tolerances of raw and engineered material intertwined with machine processing; they also address material enhancement through strip applications in timber construction. In addition, the structures are examined in the light of an extensible designing path, which acts as an interoperable procedure, bridging the virtual and the real.

Chapter 1. Know and Build Your Own Tool
Abstract
This chapter provides readers with methodological tools in order to stimulate a critical examination of the following case studies. The section briefly introduces the relations between a computational way of thinking and the fabrication side of an architectural project. This chapter allows considering the digital not merely as a medium, but as a new inventive mean that expands the traditional design process. For the purpose of this chapter, the question is not if Information Technology has triggered the change for the better or not, but rather if digital machines—intended in a broad sense both as generative media and as manufacturing tools—might take the role of parameters for the computational generation of architecture at full scale. The aim is to depict through a storytelling in which way the digital design capacity and materialization processes merge in a seamless process reinstating the figure of the architect as a digital master builder.

Chapter 2. Material: Digital in Action
Abstract
In this chapter, the role of material production becomes crucial. Digital fabrication technologies are expanding the role of virtual computation and in their mastering is concealed the task of the digital master builder. The narrative is an account of small-scale wooden design experiences gathered in two different groups underlining different opportunities arising from distinctive workflows. In both cases, computation and machining processes engage active roles and are actual interoperable means of production. The case studies activate different design-to-production chains of non-standard structures and achieving relevant outcomes for the state of the art. The two categories have as main topics, and also as design targets, the tolerances management and the enhancement of available material properties. These two topics are tackled by the teams with an investigative aptitude typical of the academic workshops and make the most of fallacies and limitations to move forward.
