This paper studies production scheduling problems connected with the variability of the absenteeism level in manufacturing industries. In particular, we focused our attention on the mass production systems highly automatized becuase they are especially sensitive to workforce fluctuations.A mathematical model of the production system has been built and a computer package suitable to use even on minicomputers has been derived and tested for several runs. Our package uses an original dynamic programming algorithm to maximize an Index of Performance of the system; in this case the index is the ‘expected value’ of the efficiency of the system, maximized over a given time span.
