This chapter is designed for those who know little or nothing about computers and who would like to find out whether it is worth the time and effort of learning computing to help them in their work in the environmental sciences. It is not a guide to learning computer programming: many texts already serve this function, and we shall list some of them at the end. Rather, it covers the very first steps necessary to become a proficient computer user.
