Abstract

This chapter aims to reconcile global production network theory with reflections on mining and governance. For this purpose, the author introduces two new terms. The term global chains of command serves as a means to highlight the influence of transnationals on the everyday life of Africans that does not stem from corruption or geopolitics but rather from economic capital and infrastructural power. Besides investors and companies, this global chain of command also links global consumers around the world with African miners. The term crisis of chain governance enables a comparison of the mining boom of the 2000s with a similar situation in the 1960s and 1970s. In both crises, actors of the “Global South” challenged the existing international division of labor and were confronted with swift responses by dominant players.
