Abstract
The conclusion returns to the argument that we can only fully understand China’s growth and future trajectory within the context of the international architecture that the USA has designed. One of the main objectives of this architecture was to mitigate inter-state competition and the contradictions of capitalism. It argues that it is too early to say whether it will have succeeded in this regard with reference to China. But it does highlight some of the ‘known unknowns’ that will constitute important factors in the future trajectories of these two countries
