Abstract

This concluding chapter draws together the findings from the study to underline the critical importance of political symbols to national identity formation, and therefore nation-building. It summarises the strengths of certain symbols in nation-building in post-conflict Timor-Leste and highlights the shortcomings of the state after a decade of independence. The findings of the book point to further questions of identity formation and nation-building that have arisen since 2012. The concluding remarks suggest avenues of enquiry to pursue in the future, including the increasing numbers of young East Timorese who have migrated in the years following self-determination.
