Über dieses Buch

This book provides knowledge to professionals on how to model, calculate, and design machinery for construction operations. Carrying out construction works is unthinkable without construction machines. Awareness of role and properties of construction machines is very important for their design, production, application, and maintenance. This book defines the basic characteristics of the main representatives of construction machines for earthworks, bulldozers, loaders, excavators, vibratory rollers, and transport vehicles, truck cranes, telehandlers, and construction trucks.

The book presents a step-by-step explanation of the key technical solutions of mobile construction machines in an expert and illustrative manner, with the help of photographic images, schematics, and case studies. The book will be of use to professionals in industry and students in engineering departments.

Frontmatter
Chapter 1. Introduction
Abstract
Construction works are carried out on various buildings, civil engineering and high-rise construction, and other facilities. Civil engineering works are construction works on the objects of transport and water management projects. The main feature of these works is the extent of earthworks over a larger area. Construction works are works on residential, commercial and social facilities.

Chapter 2. Soil Properties
Abstract
Soil is the surface layer of the Earth crust. It is formed by the decay and erosion of rocks under the influence of atmospheric phenomena, water and the work of organisms. The action of organisms creates loose layers on the surface of which the organic world develops. Soils differ in appearance and properties.

Chapter 3. Soil Digging Resistances
Abstract
Digging the soil is based on a sharp wedge. The wedge is the basic element for achieving the thrust force of the machine for the purpose of digging the soil.
Draško Mück, Dinko Mikulić
Chapter 4. Traction Properties of Construction Machines
Abstract
The properties of construction machines are based on their traction characteristics. Both engineers and machine users use traction indicators for the analysis and selection of the machines. The traction properties of the machines are the result of the joint work of the engine, transmission, and final drives of the machine.
Draško Mück, Dinko Mikulić
Chapter 5. Bulldozers
Abstract
Bulldozers are machines for excavation and relocation of soil by pushing with dozer tools. The bulldozer consists of a base machine on tracks or wheels and a dozer blade with a knife.
Draško Mück, Dinko Mikulić
Chapter 6. Loaders
Abstract
Loaders are intended for loading materials into transport vehicles and for digging soil, sand, gravel, etc. They can be wheeled or tracked. Most commonly used are wheeled loaders.
Draško Mück, Dinko Mikulić
Chapter 7. Backhoes
Abstract
Excavators are used for the construction works of soil excavation, loading or transfer of soil. Depending on the place of work, they are divided into land excavators and floating excavators. Each group of excavators is classified into individual types, depending on the use, mode of operation, and performance of the machine.
Draško Mück, Dinko Mikulić
Chapter 8. Soil Compaction Machines
Abstract
By compacting the soil layer, its density increases, and thus also the load capacity, which is very important for the load capacity and durability of road and other structures. Soil compaction depends on the type of material, moisture content, and method of compaction.
Draško Mück, Dinko Mikulić
Chapter 9. Mobile Cranes
Abstract
Mobile cranes are used on construction sites to lift and move various cargos, Fig. 9.1. Due to their mobility and passability on construction sites, mobile cranes achieve their work performance in transshipment, assembly, and other works of moving cargos. Modern mobile cranes are hydraulic telescopic cranes.
Draško Mück, Dinko Mikulić
Chapter 10. Telehandlers
Abstract
For lifting and moving light loads on the construction site, telehandlers, i.e. telescopic forklifts, have been developed, Fig. 10.1. Light loads up to 5 t are lifted and delivered by telescopic forks to a certain position of the construction object.
Draško Mück, Dinko Mikulić
Chapter 11. Construction Trucks
Abstract
Construction trucks belong to the category of cargo vehicles. The construction operative mainly uses trucks for the transport of bulk cargo and other construction materials, concrete mixer trucks, concrete pumps, tanks, and others. Construction trucks are used in combination with a trailer or in combination with a towing vehicle and a semi-trailer (tractor), forming thus a set of freight vehicles.
Draško Mück, Dinko Mikulić
Chapter 12. Maintenance of Construction Machines
Abstract
A modern maintenance system of construction machines ensures their reliability and availability throughout their lifetime. Machine manufacturers, authorized sales service organizations and machine users (construction companies, entrepreneurs) achieve business results when they cooperate with each other in the procurement, use, and maintenance of the machines.
