The separated flow around inclined airfoils can be controlled by unsteady actuation near the leading edge (LE), increasing the maximum lift coefficient without the need for heavy and complex high lift devices such as flaps . Zero net mass flow devices (ZNMF) are often used for this purpose. While certainly favourable for industrial application, actuation via ZNMF faces some problems. In particular, to independently control both amplitude and frequency of the excitation is considered a “great challenge” . This is even more severe when the wave form of the actuation is non-sinusoidal, i. e., contains more than one frequency component.
