Abstract

The instant of significant excitation of the vocal-tract system is known as epoch and since the most significant excitation takes place around the instant of glottal closure, it is also termed as glottal closure instant (GCI). In this paper, the concept of cumulative impulse strength is utilized for the extraction of epochs from singing voice and its performance has been compared with some established methods for epoch extraction from speech signals. The method is being applied on Indian classical music as well as on some types of western music. The analysis has been carried out on a large database named “LYRICS” which consists of singing sounds with synchronous electroglottogram (EGG) recordings, containing different types of singing techniques.
