As artificial intelligence (AI) increasingly functions as an autonomous decision-maker in various fields ranging from medical diagnostics to journalism, algorithmic bias has become a formidable sociotechnical challenge. As a response to this issue, there is a remarkable “social turn” in AI research (Cristianini et al. 2023), as well as Microsoft’s 2025 report Societal AI: Research Challenges and Opportunities (Shi et al. 2025), emphasizing that these systems are complex and multifaceted sociotechnical assemblages embedded in modern life. Against this backdrop, Donghee Shin’s Debiasing AI: Rethinking the Intersection of Innovation and Sustainability (Shin 2025) offers a penetrating core argument: any attempts at debiasing AI that overlook the complexities of human cognition as well as the multi-layered social, political, and cultural environments in which AI operates are ultimately doomed to fail.
