Our next fundamental notion, that of the degree of a projective variety X ⊂ ℙn, may be defined in ways for the most part exactly analogous to the notion of dimension. As in the case of the various definitions of dimension, the fact that these definitions are equivalent (or, in some cases, that they are well-defined at all) will not be established until we have introduced them all.
