In the empirical determination of the production technology of firms in a certain industry, the indirect approach using dual variables (prices) has more and more superseded the direct estimation using primal variables (input and output quantities). For obvious econometric reasons,2) it is much easier to achieve unbiased estimates of the parameters of the cost function - or, for firms that can freely choose their output levels, of the profit function - than of the underlying production function itself.
