High wear on ball screws as a key component of the electromechanical feed axis determines the availability of a machine tool. To minimize machining times, high dynamic motions of the feed axis can be achieved with high jerk values of the servomotors. Higher jerk values cause impact stresses in the ball screw which can lead to premature failure. An empirical model to describe the wear behavior of ball screws, taking into account the influence of jerk, is developed based on test bench analyses. The aim is to achieve a higher availability of machine tools and lower life- cycle production costs.
