Abstract: Reheating furnaces are used in steel plants for the heating of billets, blooms and slabs. The furnace hearth has to withstand very high abrasion, thermal shock and vibration during operation. The hearth refractory should also have high volume stability and high strength. Sometimes steel plants opt for a more costly/higher grade refractory in the preheating-zone hearth of the furnace to match the hearth life with other zones of the furnace. Different compositions of high-alumina bricks were designed to obtain the required properties at optimum cost. It was found that the properties of bricks with the optimum amount of the selected sintering aid were the most impressive. On the basis of our study, a brick was developed for trial in the preheating-zone hearth of the reheating furnace of Merchant Mill of SAIL's Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP). It was observed that the developed bricks of the preheating zone have comparable erosion to high-grade refractories of other zones of the furnace. ...
