Dieser Beitrag stellt die wichtigsten Ereignisse in der Brexit-Debatte aus britischer Sicht dar. Die Zeit reicht von 1998 bis Ende 2019, als die Politik von Boris Johnson festgelegt wurde. Die Entwicklung der Remain- und Brexit-Kampagnen wurde bis zum Referendum 2016 ausgewertet. Theresa May konnte im Unterhaus nicht genügend Unterstützung gewinnen. Ökonomische Studien über die Auswirkungen verschiedener Brexit-Stile wurden für GB und die EU analysiert. Nach Mays Rücktritt wurde Boris Johnson am 24.07.2019 Premierminister, doch auch er konnte anfangs keine Mehrheit für seine Politik finden. Erst bei den Parlamentswahlen am 12.12.2019 wurde eine große Mehrheit für die neue Regierung erzielt. Dies verlieh Johnson eine starke Position. Das derzeitige Ziel der Regierung ist, Verhandlungen über eine neue Beziehung zu Brüssel zu führen und die EU am 31.12.2020 zu verlassen; wird keine Einigung erzielt, müsste GB aus der EU zu den Bedingungen der WTO mit einem „Hard Brexit“ ausscheiden.
