Zusammenfassung

Die Zivilisation erwies sich als ein zentrales Anliegen bei den Ursprüngen und der Gründung des Bündnisses (Kap. 5), aber wie hat sich dieses Anliegen danach weiterentwickelt? Von der Gründung des Bündnisses im Jahr 1949 bis zum Ende des Kalten Krieges zeigen die Diskurse der NATO, wie sich die Darstellung der Zivilisation bzw. des zivilisierten Verhaltens im Laufe der Zeit je nach den gesellschaftlichen Prioritäten der jeweiligen Zeiträume verändert hat. Im Laufe dieser Jahrzehnte entwickelte das Bündnis ein ausgeprägtes Zeitbewusstsein und zeigte durchweg eine Reflexivität hinsichtlich seiner aktuellen Bedeutung in der Welt, seiner Rolle und seines Auftrags. In diesem Sinne wurde der zivilisierte Habitus des Westens auf der Ebene eines demokratischen Habitus fortgeführt. Letztlich erweist sich die Entwicklung des Referenzobjekts der NATO als ein offener Prozess, in dem bewusste und unbewusste Wahrnehmungen des Selbst und der Zeit zusammenwirken.
