Die Geld-zurück-Garantie – Mehr als nur ein Qualitätsindikator?

Zusammenfassung

Geld-zurück-Garantien erlangen in der Unternehmenspraxis eine immer größere Bedeutung, vor allem weil sie als probates Mittel zur Signalisierung hochwertiger Qualität angesehen werden – eine Annahme, die bislang wissenschaftlich ungeprüft geblieben ist. Vor diesem Hintergrund wird im vorliegenden Beitrag eine umfassende empirische Untersuchung der kaufverhaltensrelevanten Wirkungen dieses Marketinginstrumentes vorgenommen. Die Ergebnisse verdeutlichen zum einen, dass eine Geld-zurück-Garantie nur unter bestimmten Bedingungen als Qualitätssignal wirkt. Dies hängt neben der Art des Produktes (Erfahrungs- vs. Suchgut) insbesondere von der Ausprägung des für die Qualitätsbeurteilung besonders diagnostischen Merkmals Marke sowie von der Produktkenntnis der Konsumenten ab. Zum anderen zeigt sich aber auch, dass eine Geld-zurück-Garantie affektive Konsumentenreaktionen auslöst, die die Kaufabsicht von Konsumenten zusätzlich erhöhen können. Zusammenfassend stellen wir fest, dass eine Geld-zurück-Garantie – entgegen bisheriger Erwartungen aus der Praxis – nicht zwingend ein Qualitätsindikator ist, stattdessen entfaltet sie aber bisher unbeachtete affektive Wirkungen, die insbesondere auf ihre absichernde Funktion von etwaigen Fehlentscheidungen beim Kauf zurückzuführen sind.

Im Fall von GzG haben Konsumenten die Möglichkeit, die gekaufte Ware tatsächlich zu testen und benutzt zurückzugeben. In dieser Weise unterscheidet sich eine GzG von einem (verlängerten) freiwillig gewährten Rückgaberecht. So werben viele Unternehmen bspw. mit einem ausgedehnten Zeitraum für eine Rückgabemöglichkeit unbenutzter, originalverpackter Ware – zuweilen sogar unter der Bezeichnung GzG (z. B. IKEA Deutschland, Max Bahr). Dies entspricht jedoch nicht der in der Wissenschaft gängigen Auffassung von einer GzG.

In dem Anwendungsbeispiel von Green und Wind (1975) zeigt sich etwa nur, dass durch eine GzG ein gewisser Zusatznutzen generiert werden kann. Interessant ist jedoch, dass dieser bspw. höher ausfällt als für den Markennamen des Produktes.

So konnten bspw. Völckner und Hofmann (2007) im Rahmen ihrer Meta-Analyse keinen signifikanten Einfluss der Anzahl verfügbarer extrinsischer Produktmerkmale auf den Preis-Qualitäts-Zusammenhang identifizieren – ein Ergebnis, das sich in ähnlicher Weise bereits in der Meta-Studie von Rao und Monroe (1989) zeigt. Die Publikationen von Miyazaki et al. (2005) und Purohit und Srivastava (2001) erklären diesen Sachverhalt damit, dass in den der Meta-Analysen zugrunde liegenden Studien das Zusammenspiel der Produktmerkmale nicht berücksichtigt wird, obwohl dies auf Basis theoretischer Überlegungen erforderlich wäre.

Die Auswahl der intrinsischen Produktmerkmale erfolgte über eine Analyse von Werbeanzeigen in Printmedien sowie im Internet.

Die damit erforderliche Angabe der E-Mail-Adresse stellt gleichzeitig ein Kontrollinstrument für mehrfach ausgefüllte Fragebögen dar.

Cote und Buckley (1987) analysieren in ihrer Studie die Ergebnisse der Konstruktvalidierung von 70 veröffentlichten Datensätzen. Hierbei gelangen sie u. a. zu dem Ergebnis, dass aufgrund von Messfehlern das tatsächliche Verhältnis zwischen zwei Variablen durchschnittlich um das 2,4-fache höher lag als das geschätzte.

Die Schätzung erfolgte in Mplus. Hierbei wurde ein Maximum-Likelihood-Schätzer mit Satorra-Bentler-Korrektur eingesetzt, der sich als robust gegenüber nicht-normalverteilten Daten erweist (vgl. West et al. 1995; Hu et al. 1992).

Dies stützt die Ergebnisse von Dawar und Parker (1994), die im Rahmen einer interkulturellen Studie herausgefunden haben, dass die Marke gefolgt vom Preis die wichtigsten Qualitätssignale sind.

Die subjektive Produktkenntnis wurde im Fragebogen in Anlehnung an Brucks (1985) über zwei Indikatoren abgefragt (1. knowledge; 2. familiarity). Um die Probanden im Hinblick auf die Produktkenntnis zu unterteilen, wurde ein Mediansplit vorgenommen (vgl. z. B. Irwin und McClelland 2003). Probanden, die auf dem Median lagen, wurden aus der Untersuchung ausgeschlossen. Die Messmodelle der so entstandenen Gruppen „hohe“ und „niedrige Produktkenntnis“ wurden auf Invarianz geprüft. Es wurde partielle skalare Invarianz identifiziert, so dass die Ergebnisse der nachfolgenden Analyse nicht durch Unterschiede in den Messmodellen verzerrt sind.

Für Problemstellungen, bei denen eine Klassifizierung der Untersuchungspersonen nicht ex ante möglich ist, weisen FMSEM ein höheres Leistungsvermögen auf als Mehrgruppenanalysen mit ex ante Clusterung (vgl. etwa Hildebrandt und Görz 1999; Jedidi et al. 1997).
