Part I presents the basics of analog and digital signals and systems in the time and frequency domain. It covers the core topics: convolution, transforms, filters, and random signal analysis. It also treats important applications including signal detection in noise, radar range estimation for airborne targets, binary communication systems, channel estimation, banking and financial applications, and audio effects production. Part II considers selected signal processing systems and techniques. Core topics covered are the Hilbert transformer, binary signal transmission, phase-locked loops, sigma-delta modulation, noise shaping, quantization, adaptive filters, and non-stationary signal analysis. Part III presents some selected advanced DSP topics.

Chapter 1. Analog Signals and Systems

As the theory of Digital Signal Processing (DSP) is based on its predecessor, Analog Signal Processing (ASP), a study of analog signals and systems is necessary. This chapter handles the representation of analog signals and systems in the time domain and in the frequency domain. Core topics covered are continuous-time convolution, analog transforms (Fourier and Laplace), analog filters, and random signal analysis. It also includes some applications of ASP like signal detection in noise and radar range estimation.

Chapter 2. Discrete and Digital Signals and Systems

This chapter introduces the basic theory of Digital Signal Processing, including sampling theory and digitization, both in the time domain and in the frequency domain. The core topics covered by this chapter are discrete-time convolution, transforms (Z, Discrete-time Fourier, and Discrete Fourier), design of conventional digital filters, and the treatment of some important DSP applications, including banking and financial applications, audio effects production, design and implementation of specific digital systems (such as integrators, differentiators, resonators and oscillators).

Chapter 4. The Impact of Finite Wordlength Implementation

In the practical implementation of DSP systems, whether using hardware or software, one needs to take into account the effects of finite wordlength, especially when this length is short. This chapter deals with the effects of finite wordlength on the performance of DSP systems. Main topics covered are quantization of fixed-point and floating-point numbers, impact of quantization on DSP system implementation, coefficient quantization error in digital filters, quantization errors in arithmetic operations, and limit cycle phenomena.

Chapter 5. Multirate Digital Signal Processing

The DSP systems presented in

of this book are all single-rate systems, as the sampling rate is fixed. There are, however, many applications where it is necessary to change the sampling rate of the signal at different stages in the signal processing chain. Such multirate systems play a particularly pivotal role in the areas of filter banks, digital-to-analog conversion, de-noising, and compression. This chapter deals with the fundamentals of multirate signal processing and introduces some important multirate DSP applications.
