Frontmatter
1. Introduction
Abstract
“What if?” That was the simple and elegant title of an op-ed that New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman wrote in January 2013 about circumstances that applied then and continue to apply today. The point of Friedman’s essay was to ask whether “the recent turmoil in international markets isn’t just the product of tremors but rather of seismic shifts in the foundational pillars of the global system, with highly unpredictable consequences”? In short, he wisely challenged us to consider the proposition that “a bunch of eras are ending all at once.”

2. The Future of Procurement
Abstract
Procurement has languished toward obsolescence and will die without a transformation. Today’s Chief Procurement Officers (CPOs) have just one job: adopt a future-focused model to meet users’ needs.
Michael F. Strohmer, Stephen Easton, Martin Eisenhut, Elouise Epstein, Robert Kromoser, Erik R. Peterson, Enrico Rizzon
3. Digital in Procurement
Abstract
Digital procurement is helping companies become more effective and efficient with both strategic and operational procurement. These are important advances that will help procurement take a seat next to the C-suite. With the right digital tools in place for the right processes, procurement can focus on the work that adds value and makes procurement a true strategic partner in the company.
Michael F. Strohmer, Stephen Easton, Martin Eisenhut, Elouise Epstein, Robert Kromoser, Erik R. Peterson, Enrico Rizzon
4. Understanding Customers and Suppliers to Unlock Value
Abstract
Procurement is a relatively new discipline. In the early years, the focus was almost exclusively on lowering the prices of goods and services that were purchased. The idea was catching on just as the Communist bloc opened, and the size of the global workforce increased by one billion people. This caused labor costs to decline, and suppliers made concessions with the hopes of winning more business in a booming economy.
Michael F. Strohmer, Stephen Easton, Martin Eisenhut, Elouise Epstein, Robert Kromoser, Erik R. Peterson, Enrico Rizzon
5. Outlook
Abstract
Looking ahead at the future of procurement, we believe companies must prepare now for a vastly different operating environment and a completely new role for the function. If the transition is managed right, procurement will emerge as a true strategic partner for the business, using its immense data resources and analytics to guide the business and anticipate and manage risk.
