Abstract

This paper utilizes an instrumental variables approach to explore the influence of China's aid on the happiness of individuals in recipient countries. The results indicate that China's aid contributes significantly to the happiness of individuals in these countries. Through mechanism analysis, we identify two primary channels: the enhancement of the recipient's infrastructure and the elevation of their income levels. Individual-level heterogeneity analyses highlight a more pronounced effect of China's aid on those possessing advanced education and elevated social status. Country-level analyses further suggest that China's aid has a stronger positive correlation with happiness in countries with more advanced economic structures and superior living standards.

1
In the original data in the WVS database, the order of answers to this question is reversed. But in order to make the regression results more intuitive, we adjusted the order of the answers, which will not affect our estimation results.

2
The construction method of the recipient countries' probability of receiving aid is:\({\text{Aid}}\_{\text{Probability}}_{CHN,i} = \frac{1}{18}\sum\nolimits_{t = 1}^{18} {{\text{Aid}}\_{\text{Probabilit}}y_{CHN,i,t} }\). \({\text{Aid}}\_{\text{Probability}}_{CHN,i,t}\) is a binary variable that equals one when recipient i received a positive amount of aid from China in year t.

3
It is particularly important to note that respondent \(j\) in the recipient countries here is not the same from year to year.

4
The standard deviation of the core independent variable LlnAid is 5.068. The mean of the dependent variable Happiness is 3.106. Therefore, 0.054 = (0.0330*5.068/3.106).
