Abstract

Welcome to the second edition of the Workshop on Mobile Opportunistic Networking, MobiOpp 2010. The workshop is sponsored by ACM SIGMOBILE, and technically co-sponsored by the IFIP TC6 Working Group 6.3 "Performance of Communication Systems".

The first workshop in this series, originally settled with this name (the First International Workshop on Mobile Opportunistic Networking, MobiOpp 2007), was held on June 11th, 2007 in San Juan, Puerto Rico (USA) in conjunction with ACM MobiSys 2007. The success of MobiOpp 2007, and the growing interest of the scientific community in the area of opportunistic networking, motivated the organization of MobiOpp 2010 as a stand-alone two-day event.

MobiOpp 2010, organized by the Institute of Informatics and Telematics (IIT) of the Italian National Research Council (CNR), takes place on February 22 and 23, 2010, in Pisa (Italy) in the wonderful tourist area of Tuscany. Pisa offers a cultural and historical atmosphere that is the most appropriate for an enjoyable and professionally fruitful meeting.

The response to the Call for Papers shows that MobiOpp 2010 has been particularly well received by researchers working in the field of Opportunistic Networks. Specifically, we received sixty-three submissions, addressing topics related to all fields of opportunistic networks. Each paper was reviewed by (at least) three reviewers, and after an in-depth (on-line) discussion phase, the Program Committee selected nine full papers and nine concise papers for oral presentation in the workshop sessions. In addition, nine papers have been selected for poster presentation.

In response to separate Call for Demos and Call for PhD Forum we received several interesting proposals that enriched the MobiOpp 2010 technical program. Specifically, the Demo co-chairs selected six proposals to be demonstrated during the workshop, and the PhD Forum co-chairs have identified ten PhD-candidate presentations.

These figures, and the quality of the received contributions, show that MobiOpp is already seen as a premiere forum for presenting and discussing ideas and results in all fields of Opportunistic Networking.

Two keynote speeches by leading researchers in the field, Andrew Campbell (Dartmouth College, USA) and Jon Crowcroft (University of Cambridge, UK), and a thought-provoking panel complete the MobiOpp 2010 program.
