The California Department of Motor Vehicles has granted the US-based company Apple an official permit for self-driving cars on public roads. “Project Titan” is thereby taking off again.

Rumours have always swirled around US tech giant Apple. Project Titan has also frequently fuelled speculation, including Apple’s apparent intention to unveil its first self-driving car. Technology experts and industry insiders have thought for some time that such a product is slated for release in 2019 by the iPhone manufacturer from Cupertino. The most valuable company in the world has not yet officially confirmed the project. Rumours are now buzzing again because, on 14 April 2017, the California Department of Motor Vehicles awarded the company a permit to test self-driving cars on roads in the state.

The iCar project has been completely turned upside down

Until the middle of 2016, Apple initially worked on the iCar as the first car of its own, but has since changed the focus of the project to self-driving technology. Dozens of employees working on the iCar project have been laid off according to media reports based on industry insiders. In the automotive sector, however, numerous vehicle construction specialists were also recruited from other companies such as Tesla.

Apple’s value has continued to rise irresistibly. Since the beginning of the year, its shares on the Nasdaq Stock Market have already risen by 22 percent. Analysts see more potential in fact and speculate that Apple could even be worth $824 billion this year.
