The Dodge Challenger GT is the first muscle car with all-wheel drive: Borgwarner’s torque-on-demand transfer case drives all four wheels when needed.

BorgWarner is supplying its Torque-On-Demand transfer case with its vehicle dynamic control (VDC) technology to allow dynamic stability control for the 2017 and 2018 Dodge Challenger GT. The transfer case transitions between rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive using an electromagnetic clutch, but only when the rear wheels lose traction. The VDC stability program uses data, such as yaw rate, lateral acceleration and steering wheel angle, to determine the appropriate distribution of torque between front and rear axle.

Fun to drive with extra safety

In sport mode, the three-stage electronic stability program (ESP) engages later, but all-wheel drive is maintained. When all-wheel drive is not needed, the system switches to rear-wheel drive to save fuel. The Dodge Challenger GT is powered by a 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 engine with 227 kW. The eight-speed automatic transmission from ZF can be operated via paddles mounted on the steering wheel.

BorgWarner’s on-demand transfer case is known already from the Dodge Charger and the Chrysler 300 models.
