Volvo Cars is making further investments in its in-house development of electric motors. A new laboratory for the development of motors for electric vehicles has now been opened in Shanghai, China.

Volvo has opened a new laboratory for electric motors in Shanghai (China), helping to advance its in-house development of electric motors. Together with batteries and the corresponding power electronics, electric motors form the key components of electric cars. The Swedish car manufacturer has already been working on electric motors in Gothenburg (Sweden) and operates laboratories for battery development in Sweden and China.

By developing electric motors in-house, Volvo has positioned itself to be able to further optimise the entire electric drivetrain. "Through in-house design and development, we can fine-tune our e-motors to ever better levels," says Henrik Green, Chief Technology Officer at Volvo. The new laboratory in China will develop motors for all-electric and hybrid vehicles in particular, which will be based on the upcoming generation of the scalable vehicle platform SPA 2.
