Most students of economics are happy to be asked the question ‘What is economics?’ The answer to that question is confidently answered in any first chapter in any introductory textbook. A world of scarce resources and infinite human wants provides economics with its subject matter. However, ask any student of economics the question ‘How do you do economics?’ and the reply may be far less confident, if indeed the question is understood at all. It is to that second question that this chapter addresses itself by considering what is meant by economic methodology.
