To test the hypothesis that the endothelial glycocalyx layer (EGL) may play a crucial role in protecting the artery from excessive infiltration of low density lipoproteins (LDLs), LDL transport in a multilayer artery model with EGL was simulated numerically under steady state flow conditions. The results showed that the increase in EGL thickness caused a sharp decrease in LDL concentration in intima, suggesting that an intact EGL might be crucial in protecting the arterial wall from excessive lipid infiltration/accumulation, hence can spare the arterial wall from atherosclerotic disease.
